TOP 5 FRIDAY: Googs it.

Friday, May 18th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

My pal Lyndsay Rush wrote a great post this week about what she has googled lately. As well, a handful of us sat around the other night with our smart phones in hand, and giggled through the list of things we found important enough to google, or “googs,” on the go.

So keeping it short and sweet this Friday, here are the top 5 things I’ve googled lately.

. . . . .

1. “bake with salted or unsalted butter”

It seems that no matter how mature I get, I will never have this fact memorized. It’s what I call a Mom Fact- things that Moms just seem to know. Sadly, my mom was in France at the time of need, so google had to suffice.

By the way, the answer is unsalted.

2. “I can’t make you love me”

Great song. And it’s true- I can’t make you love me.

3. “China flag”

We were in an emoji war, trying to text as many Asian symbols as possible. I just wanted to make sure I got the Chinese flag right. I want to win, but I want to win fair.

4. “Vandy baseball roster”

Well, no one can be surprised about me needing these stats on hand right now. Love those dudes.

5. “Brentwood skating park”

It’s a complicated story. I needed to find the skating rink, I don’t know why I ever called it a park. Parks are for skateboarding. Skateboarding makes me fall down and cry. We wanted rollerskating, old school style.

But I needed to googs the location so that these things could happen.

It was a dream of a Saturday and thanks to google, we got there just fine.

. . . . .

YOUR TURN!

Look on your phone or computer and tell me what are the last five things you have googled!

TOP 5 FRIDAY: Instagram!

Friday, May 11th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

I love instagram. [I also am growing to love phonto, thanks to Adam Buzard, but that's beside the point.]

I think instagram is fun because it makes you feel like you can legitimately take pretty pictures. That may be why photographers, the real kind, don’t love instragram. I dunno. Also, I just plain like looking at what other people choose to photograph.

And since we’ve been quite wordy this week, with all the job talk and alarm talk and all, I thought today we would just focus on pictures.

So I went back through my instagram feed and picked my top 5 favorite pictures… in random order.

. . . . .

1. The lake /// http://instagr.am/p/Jp57YRGyMQ/

I love when we get to spend an afternoon on the lake. It’s probably one of the best parts of a Nashville summer. Our first outing was about two weeks ago with one of our pals who is a member of the boat club, so I took this one off the back of the boat while we were floating around.

2. Cloudy Edinburgh // http://followgram.me/i/212470302_1271735

This picture beautifully displays how nasty days in Edinburgh look and feel. This was out the living room window of my flat, that has since been sold. It’s strange to think of this picture as once-in-a-lifetime since it was my everyday view for six months, but alas. It is.

3. Jett + Annie /// http://instagr.am/p/KY1-_dGyLi/

At this week’s Vandy baseball game, my buddy Jett went with us. When we decided to take a picture, he said, “When we are both famous, we’ll be glad we have this.” Awesome, huh? This kid. I like him a lot.

[BTW... I got parental permission before posting this picture. I'm not a monster.]

4. Glitter is my favorite color. /// http://instagr.am/p/IYSjApmyM9/

It’s just true. And this glitter polish is so cheap, with tiny sparkles, that it doesn’t cement to your nails the way the fancy stuff does. Happy girl.

5. Aiden’s boots /// http://instagr.am/p/HChViOGyA5/

I was watching Aiden while his folks were busy the other week, before we had dining room furniture. He brought his cars, I have lots of poker chips, we made a road. Plain and simple. I love his little boots.

. . . . .

I wish I was smart enough to tell you what each border and filter were for each picture, but I can’t remember. I will tell you this- Brannan is my go-to favorite filter.

YOUR TURN!

Link us to your favorite instagram picture [of your own or someone else's if you don't have instagram]. Or write a post today on your own blog with five of your favorite instagrams and link us to that!

What is your favorite filter to use?

TOP 5 FRIDAY : A Nashville Brunch.

Friday, April 20th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

I have some friends coming in town today [squeeeeal!] and I think I’m going to make them eat brunch three times in two days. I know that math doesn’t exactly work out, but I have faith in our ability to eat the right meals at the wrong times.

Because brunch in Nashville is pure joy.

Here are my Top 5 favorite brunch spots around Nashville….

1. Pancake Pantry

Similar to, but better than: International House of Pancakes

What I order: Cornmeal pancakes with honey

Don’t miss: Pancakes. Duh. Or the celebrity spotting – they love this place.

Etc.: There is almost always a line. Like a WHOA line, especially on Saturday mornings. If you can, go on a weekday or go at weird hours- it is open, serving breakfast, from 6am – 3pm [I KNOW TOO MUCH].

. . . . .

2. Sky Blue

Similar to, but better than: Waffle House [though you KNOW I love the Waffle House... this has similar types of food, just MUCH better quality]

What I order: Em’s bowl… eggs, potato, biscuit, cheese, gravy. [Do not judge me, people.] And their chai is amazing.

Don’t miss: Stuffed French Toast Pancakes. Holy sweet deliciousness.

Etc.: Sky Blue is so good but has limited seating, so go there with a back-up plan in case it is full of East Nashville peeps drinking their coffee black and talking about the music biz and their love for dogs. [I heart East Nasty. Seriously.]

. . . . .

3. Frothy Monkey

Similar to, but better than: Starbucks

What I order: Oatmeal with bananas, blueberries, and walnuts.

Don’t miss: The coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker, but for those who are, this place holds a special spot in their caffeinated hearts.

Etc.: Frothy Monkey is my jam. I love that place. So if you come to brunch there, let me know and there is a good chance we will run into each other. It’s happily happened before and will hopefully happen again.

. . . . .

4. Germantown Cafe

Similar to, but better than: your local fancy breakfast joint

What I order: shrimp and grits and I make no apologies about that.

Don’t miss: They have these yeast rolls that are rolled in cinnamon sugar. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.

Etc.: There are two locations now. You can either go to the original one in, not surprisingly, Germantown, or the new location in East Nashville. Germantown is really cute, but can get crowded. East Nashville isn’t as cute, but always has seating.

. . . . .

5. Marche

Similar to, but better than: La Madeleine

What I order: The menu at Marche changes seasonally [which I LOVE], so there is just no consistent order. But I will say this- I have never had a meal at Marche that wasn’t BEYOND. I’m sure you know what I’m trying to say there.

Don’t miss: The pastries. They are awesome.

Etc.: I fell in love with Nashville over a Marche brunch. And I fall back in love every time I go.

. . . . .

A few of these restaurants are open for more meals than just breakfast/brunch, so just tuck that info into your back pocket.

YOUR TURN!

If you live in Nashville, share your favorite brunch spot!

If you live outside of Nashville, why not tell us the best brunch place in your town?

[It's a fun weekend in Nashville- including a Dave Barnes concert tonight! If you are going to the show and you see me bee-bopping around, say hi!!]

[If you are headed to town soon, you might also want to check out my Top 5 favorite Nashville lunch spots. But I'm not the boss of you. Eat wherever you want. :) ]

Have a great weekend, y’all!

TOP 5 FRIDAY: A candy-coated situation.

Friday, March 16th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

You see, I find myself in a bit of a situation.

When my herd of a small group came over on Tuesday, we had soup and grilled cheese sandwiches and M&Ms for dessert. [By the way, I did the sammies in the oven and it was a massive success. 450 degrees. Flip after 6 minutes. Boom.]

I thought those girlies would eat all of the candy, like they did the grilled goodness.

They didn’t.

So that is my situation.

About thirty feet from my current location sits a bag of M&Ms that are practically screaming to be eaten. Because they are, in fact, my favorite candy. Hence the reason I do not keep candy in the house. Candy knows my name. And calls to me.

But I am the picture of self-control [yeah right], so I am going to resist [at least, I'm gonna try].

So if I cannot partake, I will write about. [Insert joke here regarding writing a post about sex? Nah. But it would have been a good laugh. You get it? If I can't partake, I'll write about it? And I'm single, so.... Forget it. I've over-explained. Joke ruined.]

On to today’s Top 5 Friday…..

Here, in no particular order, are my TOP 5 favorite candies!

 1. M&Ms

Well, that is one in particular order. M&Ms are my favorite. In fact, I’m speaking this weekend and the very first story I am going to share is about my love for M&Ms. It’s a very touching and moving story. [Not really, it is just funny.] And because I know the question is burning in your soul, no- I am not picky about what type of M&M. Original is my favorite, but I have never met one I didn’t like.

2. CADBURY CREME EGGS

We are all grateful that this sugar concoction is only available for a short time each year because heavens. to. betsy. I love those eggs. Some say, “they are just too sweet for me.” I say, “I wish they were too sweet for me.” They aren’t. I adore them. I have a limit on how many my system can handle. I just haven’t found that limit yet.

3. CHEWY SWEET TARTS

No kidding, these things make my mouth hurt. I think they are made of pure sugar and a plethora of chemicals and I am ALL IN. One of these days I’m gonna break a tooth eating a chewy sweet tart and you will say, “I saw that one coming in March of 2012 when she told us about them.” Mark my words. But they are tart and nice… words I also use to describe my sister.

4. TWISTED CANDY BARS

This is a homage to the Scottish half of my soul because Twisteds are not commonly carried in the USA. These are candy bars that are virtually five tiny cadbury creme eggs connected together. I won’t tell you how many I came home with in 2008 after a few weeks in Scotland. Nor will I tell you what happened to every. last. one. of. them.

Ahem.

5. SNO-CAPS

Caveat: this is a movie theater only candy for me. These feel like a special treat because I save them only for the big screen. I have, on more than one occasion, spilled an entire box on the floor of the theater. As you can imagine, it makes me real popular with my fellow patrons. Next time you pop in to catch a flick, try this candy. Then report back to me asap.

. . . . .

I hope you now see why it is a terrible decision for me to keep candy in my home. Yikes.

I will now walk farther away from the M&Ms and encourage my roommate to eat them while I’m gone this weekend.

. . . . .

YOUR TURN!

What are your favorite candies? Are you a chocolate kinda gal? Or a sour patch kid? Tell us which confections call to you.

TOP 5 FRIDAY: Rom Coms, y’all.

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

A few weeks ago my friends and I went to see The Vow.

Now. I’m a crier. I really am. But due to some extenuating circumstances [i.e- I was feeling a little bitter and frustrated and had rolled my eyes a lot that day], I was not moved by the film. In fact, I did not prefer it at all.

Me thinks I’ll never watch it again.

I’m sorry. It’s not that Channing Tatum isn’t beautiful. He is. It’s that the whole set-up, though true, is weird and too dramatic for me and I wanted to scream “OH RIGHT IT ALL WORKED OUT IN THE 85 MINUTES I’VE BEEN SITTING HERE BECAUSE THAT’S REAL LIFE.”

Like I said. Bitterness. Eye-rolling.

And I was wishing for a romantic comedy, my favorite of the movie genres.

There are some Rom Coms that come on television and I watch it no matter what. There are some I can quote at the drop of a hat and some that bring a smile to my face the moment I remember it.

Per usual, I can only list five, leaving many for you to blog about / comment about and many more that I love dearly.

So here are my Top 5 favorite romantic comedies!

1. You’ve Got Mail

This is a given. It is my all-time favorite movie. New York in the fall. New York in the spring. A local book shop. An internet relationship. These are a few of my favorite things… And call me Crazy McCrazerson, but this movie makes me miss the 90s.

2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

My friend Baker said just the other day, “you know that yellow dress? Everybody knows that yellow dress.” And I was kinda taken aback because yes of course I know the yellow dress. It’s one of the most beautiful dresses in the history of rom coms. I just didn’t realize that boys loved that dress too.

Noted.

I much prefer the Matthew McConaugheys to the Ryan Reynolds any day and this movie proves it true. And all the crazytown things that this girl does makes me want to be her friend real bad.

3. Notting Hill

In October, when I was with my friends in London, Kelli and I insisted on a trip to Notting Hill. We saw the Travel Book Shop, we saw where the blue door used to be, all of it. We made a point to say, “whoopsie daisy!” any time it fit, and sometimes when it didn’t. Such a fun British film. You need to see it again if it has been a while.

4. Serendipity

New York again. I can’t help it. That place owns a piece of my heart. If we want to get serious for about 45 seconds, I will say that I love this movie because I love how it makes us believe that we are out of control. I also love that a book is a central character. I just love it all. I want to watch it right now.

5. Just Like Heaven

I shall call this the dark horse of my list. You amy or may not have seen this one, but it is great. I mainly adore the apartment where the majority of this movie is set. [Movie apartments are always so awesome, aren't they?] Though the idea of it all is impossible, there is something beautifully hilarious about this storyline.

. . . . .

YOUR TURN!

What are your favorite romantic comedies? I know you have ‘em. Spill it.

[And... your thoughts on The Vow? Am I just a jerk?]

Top 5 Friday: Disney songs.

Friday, February 10th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

See. Here’s what is about to happen.

Both the … Ahem, all the men that read my blog are going to leave because we are talking about Disney. But I’ve really got my hopes up that as the lay-deez load up the comment section today, a few dudes will add their thoughts as well. Seriously. Guys. Do it. Please?

On to the post…

The other day I needed a pandora station that meant nothing to my adult sensibilities. I needed not to run across a song that elicited any emotional response. [Sister was spent - you were there.]

So I typed in “Disney songs” and for the next six hours [no joke], I enjoyed some of the dearest songs of my childhood. And I began to think about which of the Disney songs are my favorite.

Hence. This Top 5 Friday list- my favorite Disney songs.

. . . . .

1. Lavender Blue

When I wrote a eulogy for my grandmother’s funeral, I wrote about ballet dancing in her sewing room to this song. And it has held a special place in my heart ever since.

. . . . .

2. Part of Your World

All I have to say is, “Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat…” and you could probably finish the rest of the song. Great great song. It’s just one of those that every American knows.

Also Ariel? She had gadgets and gizmos of plenty. But who cares? No big deal. She wanted more.

[You're welcome.]

. . . . .

3. Stay Awake

All. Time. Favorite. Disney. Movie. And this is just one of the many wonderful songs from this musical. Another favorite is “I Love To Laugh” because I, in fact, love to laugh. This song also makes me think of my favorite family whom I don’t get to see anymore. [We tried to skype one time while I was in Scotland and I couldn't stop crying.... so... that's unfortunate.]

. . . . .

4. Beauty & the Beast

Do you love or do you love? I know. It’s the jam. Angela Lansbury is amazing.

. . . . .

5. A Whole New World

Don’t you dare close your eyes.

Also, for realz- does it still amaze anyone that Steve from Full House is the voice of Aladdin? 8th grade Annie thought that was the coolest because as the oldest of 3 daughters, I TOTALLY related to DJ Tanner. Probably still do. Candace Cameron Bure, let’s be friends.

And now we’re totally off topic. Welcome to what it is like to be in my head. [read: obnoxiously ping-pongish]

. . . . .

Things I’m not going to tell you: how my 3rd grade boyfriend sang “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” to me in the lunch line, how “Not in Nottingham” makes me tear up, or how I wished my name was “Truly Scrumptious.”

YOUR TURN!

What are your favorite Disney songs? I know I left out a ton of gems… oh the stresses of only being allowed to pick five.

Top 5 Friday: Nashville is delicious at noon.

Friday, January 13th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

I love when people email me questions about Nashville.

It is like when someone asks you to brag about your siblings or your kids or your own personal best friend’s accomplishments. Meaning, I love talking about Nashville.

When you lovelies come to town [and I love when you do], you always want to know where to eat, where to play, and where to hear the best music.

So today I’m going to tell you my favorite places to eat lunch.

See, we eat out a lot here. Like, A LOT. Because so many of us are singlets and we love to hang together, we have managed to find a few great lunch joints that don’t cost a pretty penny but are totes delish.

[Uh oh. Nash talk. Sorry.]

So in no order of preference, here are my top 5 favorite lunch spots in Nashville.

. . . . .

1. Baja Burrito

Similar to, but better than: Moe’s Southwest Grill

What I order: A chicken taco, chips, and a drink

Approximate cost: $5

Don’t miss: The roasted tomato salsa or the fruit tea.

Etc.: Do you know this thing I speak of? Fruit tea? It’s amazing and it is EVERYWHERE in this town. These restaurants will each woo you with their unique blends of tea, orange juice, other juices, and awesome. And Baja’s is one of the best.

. . . . .

2. McDougal’s

[The website is, well, lacking. But it gives you the address, which is necessary.]

Similar to, but better than: Zaxby’s

What I order: Grilled chicken salad, no red onions, ranch dressing on the side.

Approximate cost: $7

What not to miss: If you like spicy, they have great honey-spicy stuff. But as for me and my house, we will not eat spicy. Also, you get a tiny dollop of ice cream at the end. Don’t forget to get that thang.

. . . . .

3. Burger Up

Similar to, but WAY better than: Ted’s Montana Grill

What I order: The local salad with grilled chicken

Approximate cost: $11

What not to miss: Sweet potato fries. And fried pickles. And the woodstock burger. Dang, just eat there a few times and order something different every time. You won’t be mad about it.

. . . . .

4. Edley’s

Similar to, but better than: your average BBQ joint

What I order: They have a special every day, and I usually get coerced by my emotions to get that. But if not, the turkey BBQ sandwich is my choice.

Approximate cost: $8

What not to miss: The coleslaw. It’s vinegar based, which makes me terribly happy.

Etc: Edley’s is brand new, but has won our neighborhood over like whoa. I say that to say, I haven’t tasted everything there, but my friends certainly have [my people go there EVERY DAY], and it is all amazing.

. . . . .

5. The Grilled Cheeserie

Similar to, but better than: I mean, is there a comparison to a truck that drives around town and makes amazing grilled cheese sandwiches? Me thinks not.

What I order: The basic grilled cheese and tomato soup

Approximate cost: $8

What not to miss: The truck. It parks somewhere different every day, so you need to check their facebook page to see where they are parked. Tricky stuff, restaurants with wheels.

. . . . .

[If you are headed to town soon, you might also want to check out my Top 5 favorite Nashville brunch spots. But I'm not the boss of you. Eat wherever you want. :) ]

If you live in Nashville, share your favorite lunch spot!

If you live outside of Nashville, why not tell us the best lunch place in your town?

Top 5 Friday: Guilty pleasure music.

Friday, January 6th, 2012

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

There is no reason why I love these songs. I just do. Do I feel a smidge of shame? Maybe. But do I turn the station when the radio plays one of these? Absolutely not.

These are the Top 5 songs that I love dearly, even if it isn’t cool to love them. These are the songs that I remember singing as a child, or as a teen, and knowing that they would follow me into my adult life and be in my heart forevermore.

Don’t judge me. Celebrate with me. Watch the videos, relax into the music. Realize that in days gone by, there was some interesting songs being made that WE ALL STILL LOVE. Okay? Okay. Proceed.

1. Islands in the Stream

Dolly + Kenny = a win. Every time.

. . . . .

2. Fancy

Don’t even get me started. You know how I feel about Reba. If you haven’t read this post from when I stood beside Reba, do it. And mourn with me.

. . . . .

3. I Just Called To Say I Love You

The first boy who thinks to call me and sing this chorus will have my undying affection.

. . . . .

4. Uptown Girl

I grew up singing this song with my Mom. [Uh, dear Mama, do you care that I just told the Internet that you had a thing for Billy Joel in the 80s? Would you like me to also mention that you loved Tom Selleck from Magnum PI?

No? Ok. I won't then.]

. . . . .

5. To Be With You

Right? Who is with me? You know you loved this song. You KNOW you did. You still love it. You still do. It’s okay. This is a safe place. No judgement here.

Also, the key change at 2:30? That’s the stuff that magic is made of.

. . . . .

YOUR TURN!

Go ahead. Fess up. What are some songs that are your guilty pleasure?

Christmas questions galore.

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Instead of a normal Top 5 Friday today, I’d just love to hear from you! So here are the Top 5 questions I have for you. Answer one or all… I’m not the boss of you.

1. What gift do you hope to get this Christmas?

2. What gift are you excited to give this Christmas?

3. Will you go to church on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or both? [bonus question: Does your church have services on Sunday morning? Mine doesn't.]

4. What’s  your favorite family tradition on Christmas Day?

5. Does your family open gifts on Christmas Eve?

Top 5 Friday : Christmas tunes.

Friday, December 9th, 2011

TOP 5 FRIDAY is when we each list five of our favorite things, depending on the topic. Feel free to join in via the comments or by posting on your own blog and linking back here. Play along. It’s Friday.

. . . . .

Tis the season, y’all. Tis.

So let’s talk about our favorite Christmas songs. There are Many. Sundry. Piles. Zillions. I know. And you are going to put some in the comments that I’m gonna smack myself in the head and say, “Ugh. Yep. I should have put that in my Top 5.” But alas, you win. You always do.

So here are my top 5 favorite Christmas songs as best I can recall at this particular moment.

1. Oh Come All Ye Faithful

Dear Mariah, quit giving me goosebumps. Thanks.

2. White Christmas

I always found the ballerinas to be strange in this scene. But the song is so lovely.

3. Christmas Time Is Here

I hear this song, and I feel like it is the last day of school before Christmas holidays and I’m 10 years old and I can’t wait to eat a candy cane on the bus ride home. Nostalgia, thou art a strange friend.

4. Feliz Navidad

Members of the Downs family have been known, in the past, to furiously dance to this song. I’m just saying.

5. Mary Did You Know

It just makes me tear up every time. “…this child that you delivered will soon deliver you….” Goosebumps all over again.

. . . . .

YOUR TURN!

What are some of your favorite Christmas songs??
