Mondays are for winners.

Monday, March 28th, 2011

I think if I keep repeating this to myself, it shall soon become true.

I had an absolutely awesome weekend. My sisters were in town, some friends came to town, we watched a lot of basketball and had about forty people over to the house for BBQ. We saw Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors in concert. We ate like we were on death row [meaning good, like REALLY good food that is super bad for you but we didn't care]. And we did a lot of this…

Which leaves me with absolutely nothing to complain about.

Except the weather. It. Is. Freezing. But because Mondays are for winners, I refuse to dwell on the winter temperatures. Because I’m a winner and winners don’t dwell on negative things but pardon me, if it is 40*F in March, doesn’t that equal -20*F in my soul?

I’m just saying. It’s science. Look it up.

So… my first two (in)courage Bloom Book Club posts are up! It makes me sweaty to think of being the center of attention over there for the whole week, but it seems to be going okay so far. [Ummm, the "center of attention" part isn't what I hate- who are we kidding? I actually love that. So maybe just running the show somewhere outside of this little corner of the internet sky is what makes me nervous.]

You can check out the posts here–

Meet Annie Downs [you already know me, but you can pretend like you don't]

An Interview With Annie [thanks for the questions!]

There will be a new post there every day this week, so be sure to check it out. I mean, if you wanna.

Also, my sweet friend Ashleigh blogged about her Marine coming home from deployment and I love them. Thought you might want to love them too.

Also, it makes me mad that Charlie Sheen stole “WINNING!” from the rest of the world because it is a word that I wish I could have used a few times throughout this post already. But he high-jacked it and I’m mad.

I think you need to see this picture as well.

Know what this means? It means I’m getting ready to start writing again… in a major way. Know what that means? It means I’m about to start writing my next book. Know what that means? You’re about to have to PRAY.ME.THROUGH.

I’m spending the next few weeks honing my craft, reading books that make me think and write and make my heart feel like it is going to explode out of my chest. I don’t know what God is doing, but I can’t quit thinking about being a better writer and the excitement of starting something new. It’s kinda fun… kinda scary… and kinda awesome.

Someday, when I haven’t already written 474 words, I’ll tell you why your prayers mean so much to me when I’m writing. But for now, I’ll just remind you how I finish writing a book.

I’ve done it before. I can do it again. And hopefully, I’ll finish this one on a Monday.

WINNING!

[Ugh, see? See what he did? It's not even fun anymore. Sigh... back to your Monday, my friends.]

How was your weekend? And also- how is the weather where you are? And also- are you mad that Charlie Sheen stole “WINNING!” from the rest of the English-speaking population?

What I’m reading….

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Holley Gerth did an amazing post on (in)courage called Cyber Sabbath. Let me recommend you read it and let me recommend you live it. [I'm starting to take the Sabbath seriously. I think we all should.]

This post on Rabbit Room about authors having small houses in which they write makes me jealous and excited and makes me love my profession because we are a weird and beautiful lot. [And yes I want one.]

Emily Freeman has been doing a series on art and I’ve been devouring it. Today’s post, One Secret to Honest Art, is so good it makes me a little sick [in the good way].

Today is the first birthday of my friend Jenny’s blog- Dinner A Love Story. I read it every day.

Seth Godin released a free e-book today called SXSW Pokes. Download it and read it. [I mean, I'm not the boss of you, I'm just saying I think you'll enjoy the stories.]

Jon Acuff, of Stuff Christians Like fame, has started a new blog and I love it.

Offline, I’m currently reading the Bible and my March Real Simple magazine.

What are you reading?

From Head to Foot :: Update

Monday, March 14th, 2011

It’s been a few weeks [maybe even months?] since we talked about the fact that I wrote a book and you can read that book.

This blog is not about my book. But the blog and that book have the same author and there could be a chance that you are new here and don’t know that I wrote a book.

Hi. I’m Annie. I wrote From Head To Foot.

How are things going? Well, as you know, I self-published with Westbow Press. And it was a super good decision. I have really enjoyed working with them from the beginning. The only problem has been getting statistics and sales numbers now that the book is out.

And if I had a dollar for every time someone asked, “How many books have you sold?” I would be able to wallpaper my house with miniature portraits of George Washington.

Meaning, I still don’t know an EXACT number, but I know that there are some traditional publishers who have shown some interest in possibly picking up the book. [tiny squeal]

That is only a tiny squeal because the truth of the matter is

  1. no one is offering me a book contract right now
  2. I’m not even sure I’d want one if they did [more emphasis on dinner... thanks Seth Godin]

It’s more of a tiny squeal knowing that people have connected with the book enough that it has garnered some attention from companies who pay writers to connect with people. That’s more of the reason for the squeal. So tiny squeal all you want because it is exciting that God is using this book in some small ways. It’s fun.

Anyways, here are few things you may want to know about the book:

–> You can buy From Head to Foot here on Amazon.

–> If you have bought it and read it, would you mind writing a short and sweet [or not sweet, your prerogativereview on Amazon? It makes a HUGE difference.

–> If you are leading a small group of girls this semester, over the summer, or in the fall, there is a Leader’s Guide available for free. [Scroll down and you'll see where to put in your email address so we can email it to you.]

–> You might not know this, but I’ve been making a video for each chapter of the book for small groups. So you can see those on the FHTF YouTube page.

–> I have a AnnieBlogs facebook page. Will you like me?

Here’s another great question people keep asking me- “What is your next book?” And when people ask me that I kinda giggle and then I cry and then I start to sweat and then I pass out on the floor.

Meaning, I have some ideas but haven’t really started writing anything significant. So if you have any ideas of a book you’d like me to write, throw your idea in the hat.

And by “hat” I mean “comment box” because I actually don’t wear a lot of hats.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very exciting week here on the blog, including some awesome news from Mocha Club and my dear pal Matt Wertz and some Scotland talk and some pictures and some chats about ice cream because I love it.

Phew. That is more than enough for your Monday. See you tomorrow.

I absolutely love this book.

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

I swung by Target on my way out of Nashville before the Half Marathon weekend. I purchased a few necessary items, namely a new pair of shoes, black jeggings, and a book.

[I don't buy books much anymore- I prefer the library and borrowing from friends. But every now and again, I just love spending $10 on a book. I. Heart. Books.]

I got Mennonite in a Little Black Dress from my amazing Aunt Carol for Christmas and I devoured it in Scotland. Absolutely loved it. So when I was looking on the shelves of Target, this one, similar in cover design, jumped out at me.

I thought it looked entertaining. [I judged a book by it's cover. Forgive me. Though I highly recommend judging THIS BOOK by its cover too.... well, because I think the cover is gorgie-poo.]

Back to me standing in the book section at Target, judging this book by its cover. I flipped it over and the back cover copy was good. So I nabbed it.

And. I. Loved. It.

I mean, y’all. It has been a long time since I read a fiction book that I couldn’t put down. And listen, I read The Secret Lives of Dresses SUPER fast. Of course, I was at the beach and everyone loves a good beach read. And this book is totally that.

I get this anxious turn-the-page-too-fast thing when I love a book and I have to do a little self-talk, saying things like, “Annie, slow down. When this book ends there is no more to have. So you have to calm yourself.”

I self-talked multiple times while reading The Secret Lives of Dresses.

Here’s a spoiler-free summary, so you can get an idea of what the book is about….

“Blogger McKean’s retro fashion-forward coming-of-age debut follows Dora Winston as she sashays toward a degree in “vagueness studies” while engaged in a fruitless flirtation with her coffee shop boss. She’s got no idea what to do with her life, and then her adored grandmother, Mimi, has a stroke, and Dora is whisked back to Mimi’s vintage clothing store, where she learns more about Mimi, thanks to the secret stories Mimi has stashed away on pieces of paper stuck in the pockets of her most intriguing inventory.”

There’s a tangled love story, there’s a heroic grandmother, there’s a vintage dress shop. What more can you ask for?

Biscuits, you say?

Well. Dora makes biscuits. So there you go.

To top it all off? Erin McKean is a BLOGGER. [Meaning: Erin and I speak the same love language- blog.] The book is actually inspired by her blog A Dress Nearly Every Day and now I spent hours of my Monday night reading through her blog and I love it too.

So, pretty much, I’m a super fan.

Proof of how I feel about the book? My friend Graham was over on Monday night and I said, “I just want to take a picture showing how much I luh-uh-uh-ved this book!” And that’s when she took this photo. You’re welcome.

[Seriously. That's my real face expressing how I feel about this book. Does my shame know no bounds? Ugh. I embarrass myself.]

The only hesitation I have is that, much like Mumford & Sons, there is a tiny bit of bad language- it’s really just one character who cusses a bit. But, on the other hand, I love that this book can be 300 pages and have ZERO violence and ZERO sexual content. Just a few cuss words.

So. If you are looking for a good story with great characters that will stick with you and make you want to own dresses from the 1930s, consider this book absolutely worth your hard earned $10.

[By the way. No one sent me this book for free and asked me to write about it. I only wrote this post because I loved the book and thought you might too. I didn't blog this because I am friends with Erin McKean. But I want to be.]

A Monday List.

Monday, February 28th, 2011

1. Thank you for all your prayers on Saturday. It was a good day. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t my best showing. It was a good reminder that God’s strength is made perfect in my weakness. [It feels stupid to say that; I know it is true, but it feels like a cop-out way of saying "I failed."] It just could have gone better- my part, that is.

To say it politely- I’m not perfect. And I got a four star reminder of that.

BUT. It was great to see my friends and it was a wonderful event. I was super glad to be there.

[Big sigh. Moving on.]

2. I drove back to Nashville on Sunday night and for once, I decided that I would make myself listen to FULL albums, no skipping, no This American Life, just albums start to finish. And I made myself sing every song. [I love singing. So this was the easier of the two requirements.]

Here’s what I listened to:

I don’t know that this list matters to you at all. But here it is. It felt like a real accomplishment to listen to five straight albums. Very un-Annie. [I'm a shuffler. A major shuffler.]

3. My (in)courage friend, Heather, is raising money for her daughter. Some of our (in)courage sisters got together and donated a few items. The (in)courage email said “if you have a craft or a book you’d like to donate…” and I was looking to my right and to my left and then suddenly I was like, “Oh, you mean ME? Oh yeah! I have a book.” It my pleasure to donate a few books to help– so check out Heather’s Etsy site and buy some stuff, yo.

4. Speaking of books, my friend Seth Godin has a new book called Poke the Box releasing this week and the KINDLE VERSION OF POKE THE BOX COSTS ONLY ONE AMERICAN DOLLAR [until the end of TODAY]! $1.00. Seriously. So buy that puppy- it will change how you do business. I promise. [You may know the girl he talks about on page 1. I'm just saying. I died- in the good way.]

5. Also- this happened on the drive yesterday. Hair mustaches are all the rage in 2011.

[Do you love my serious face or what? I know. I'm a class act. Fully deserving of being in Seth Godin's book. Or. Possibly. This picture may cause him to rewrite the first two pages of the book, because I'm a nut job.]

6. Speaking of people who shouldn’t associate with yahoos like me, my (in)courage friend Ann Voskamp hit the NYT Best Sellers list last week with her AH-MAZE-ING book One Thousand Gifts. You need to read this book.

7. I miss Scotland.

Leader’s Guide!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Happy weekend, friends!

While I’m not typically a weekend blogger, it is snowing here in Nashville and the idea of exiting my fleece pajamas for any other less snuggly type of clothing seems nightmare-ish. So I shall blog.

Which is good.

Because I totes forgot to tell you yesterday afternoon when the Leader’s Guide for From Head To Foot got uploaded to my blog, therefore possible for you to download.

HERE IS THE LINK TO DOWNLOAD YOUR COPY. Just slide your email address into that box and my blog will know you want a leader’s guide and email it to you.

[We did it that way mainly because we only want legitimate folks getting it, not just randars who happen upon our corner of the internet. So this way, you have to actually have an email address to get the free book.]

Isn’t the cover the cutest? I’m telling ya- Emily Keafer has got some mad design skillz, that is for certain. In this case, I would be honored if you would judge the book by it’s cover.

So go ahead- grab you a copy. Seriously. ESPECIALLY if you are leading a small group or if you want to pass the leader’s guide on to your church’s youth director or whatevs. There are additional discussion questions, some awesome graphics, ice-breakers, and some secret stuff that is made of awesome.

ALSO. And this is a big also.

If you are trying to order more than 3 copies of From Head To Foot, Amazon is being stinky about it. So, email me [annieblogs (at) gmail (dot) com] if you are trying to get a bulk amount.

And apparently Amazon labels “bulk” as “four”. Lame. I don’t want small group leaders spending a fortune to get these books. So please. Just email a sista.

Hope you have a super great weekend.

[I mean that. Not just saying it. I don't throw around hopes like that. I'm not haphazard in my hoping. I genuinely have massive hope for your weekend.]

Book Release Party! [in photos]

Friday, December 24th, 2010

What an amazing night. It was cool that so many of our friends gathered together at Daily Grind and hugged and chatted and laughed and talked about things like, “Hey, remember that time you moved to Nashville to write a book? I didn’t think you’d do it. You did. See you later.”

I'm a dork.

Bookmarks!

Close your eyes if you are the cutest girl in the world.

If you missed the party and still need to grab a copy of the book- head to AMAZON!

[If you've finished the book, would you mind writing a REVIEW ON AMAZON?]

I’m gonna take a little holiday break, like the rest of you fine folks out there.

So have a Merry Christmas, my friends.

“Come, thou long expected Jesus….”

Yes, I love technology.

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

…but not as much as you, you see.

But I still love technology.

Always and forever.

[Name that movie, people.]

Here are three reasons why I love technology:

#1. My book is available on your Kindle!

Here is the link :: http://tinyurl.com/anniesebook

[yes, it looks very similar to the tiny url to the regular book- but that one is "anniesbook". This one is "anniesEbook". It's the small nuances that really make life worth living, isn't it?]

[A "small nuance" is a bit redundant. Like an "added bonus" or a "free gift" or an "ATM machine" or writing "dollars" on your checks when the check clearly has the word "dollars" printed at the end of that second line.]

[I learned that in 7th grade business class.]

[Weird rabbit trail ends here. I promise.]

Anyways. If you, like me, have a deep love for your Kindle (mine is actually named Kindlella), then this might be a good option for you.

. . . . .

#2. Ann’s book is available on your Kindle!

If you don’t know my friend Ann Voskamp, well, you should. Her blog, A Holy Experience, is absolutely that every.single.day. And it is the only blog that has music that doesn’t make me insanely crazy. Instead, I can’t imagine reading Ann’s poetic prose without piano in the background.

She’s written a book. And it’s gorgie-poo.

And it is available in e-reader format here: One Thousand Gifts

I’ve already started it and it makes me want to cry tears of pure enjoyment. It’s like Jane Austen meets Amy Carmichael.

Yeah. You need her book.

. . . . .

3. When kids make videos.

Here is Rock. He’s awesome. And he says my name in a melt-my-heart kind of way. For sure.

Rock’s mom Sonnie is one of my BFFs and she’s become quite the beautiful blogger as of late. So hop/skip/jump/click if you wanna.

. . . . .

So, there is three-fold proof that I love technology.

I feel like I am awkwardly ending this post, like I’m walking backwards out of a party because I peed my pants and don’t want anyone to know.

I have not literally peed my pants.

Now I have made things terribly awkward.

[Also. I can't believe I talked about peeing my pants in the same post I talked about Ann Voskamp. Somewhere, a tiny bird just fell out of its nest in disgust.]

I’m just gonna leave now.

See y’all tomorrow.

Smile, Wednesday.

Ah, Wednesday. You’re so cool.

Save Blue Like Jazz.

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Raise your hand if you have read Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. Many of you, I see.

It’s a good book. Nay, a great book.

So listen. Here’s the thing. If you read A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, you know this already- Blue Like Jazz was going to be a movie. But the investors backed out, Don announced the sad news on his blog, and then these two cool superhero dudes decided to ask the fans to pay for the movie to be made.

And it.is.happening.

Check out the video and the website and the kickstarter site [where you can donate money].

I’m not telling you because Don is my best friend [he's not, currently] but because I think this will be one of those things that you’ll want to be a part of when you look back on your life. These are stories that matter and yet don’t cost you tons of moola.

Don’s a great writer and a great friend to many of my friends. I can only imagine the feeling he must be having- people loving your words so much that they are willing to pay money… so that a movie will be made… that they have to pay more money to see. That’s powerful.

And it’s weird. And it’s beautiful. And I donated some buckaroos [proof so you know I'm not lying - I'm on page 50 of the backers] because I think it is more about dreams and community and love than it is about a book or a movie.

This is about living in such a way that my life says, our lives say, “You have a dream? Need some help getting there? I can help? Then I’m in.”

They are currently trying to raise enough to be the largest crowd-sourced project in American history. Isn’t it crazy that we can give a little, many of us giving a little, and make this massive ripple in the lake of entertainment and culture?

For my whole life, I want to be a part of these kinds of stories.

Don’t you?
