Watch it.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

So let’s relax, kick back, and watch a little video, eh? [That's for you, Brad the Canadian Pastor.]

First of all, I have to show you my friend Melissa. She can sing. WITH. HER. MOUTH. CLOSED. It is my joy right now.

Truly, is that not the funniest thing you have ever seen?? I’ll be honest. I practice this about twice a day. Cause I want to be able to do it real bad. Real real bad. It involves keeping your teeth apart and sending a HUGE amount of air from your lungs into your mouth. I dunno. I just know that I’m getting close.

On a completely different note, I saw this wonderful video about adoption this week. The family involved, Mary Beth and Brent, are dear to me. And Brent, in one short sentence, may have totally changed my outlook on adoption forever.

Bethany Christian Services – A Story of Hope from Catalyst on Vimeo.

This third one. Oh it made me laugh. Because I’m pretty sure that I want to be just like her when I get published. So hilarious. #5 is my favorite.

Hope this brightened your Tuesday.

Help Portrait

Monday, October 12th, 2009

(disclaimer: this post is about MY experience at Help-Portrait. In November, I’ll be posting at (in)courage a more zoomed out view of the project. But this is kinda like us sitting at my kitchen table talking about my experience, not a news piece. Just wanted to point out that self-centered elephant in the room.)

So my friend Jeremy [I nanny for his kids, thus also making him my nanny babies daddy] came up with this idea called Help Portrait.

[PLEASE watch the video so that you can understand the project. The rest of my post won't make a lot of sense without seeing the vision.]

hp_photo2And when I heard it about Help Portrait, I raised my hand and said, “ooh ooh! I wanna help! I wanna!!” Apparently I whined and begged just enough that Jeremy had to give in and let me help him. I saw deep value in what Jeremy wanted to do- give the overlooked an opportunity to be the focus.

But I’m not a photographer. I’m an organizer. A details girl. A “let me take care of that thing so you can do THAT more awesome thing” kind of gal. And so that’s my job at Help Portrait. Me likey. I love taking care of the details for people who need to put their effort elsewhere.

Hp_photo1The official Help Portrait event is on Dec. 12 all around the world. You can see my friend Kyle’s post – he’s a detail dude as well- and he has posted a ton of stats about Help Portrait so far. It’s insane. And beautiful. Insa-utiful. [Coined it.] Here in Nashville, we had a practice Help Portrait on Friday at the Nashville Rescue Mission. About 15 photographers came and photographed a few dozen people. And it was AH-MAZING.

Again, my detail girl role came in really handy because I got to just watch. I watched photographers tear up as they overheard one woman say, “I’ve never felt special before.” I watched a guy retake the same picture over and over again, trying to find the exact. right. pose. I watched as women floated from backdrop to backdrop, taking individuals and group shots, completely carefree.

hp_photo4For that hour, or 2 hours, the men and women of NRM felt valued. Seen. Noticed. Loved. Beautiful.

During that short amount of time, the only thing that mattered was how big to smile or which foot to put forward or how many friends can fit in one shot. Not how to pay the bills. Or how to get out of some terrible situation. Or how to find the next meal.

It was a day that I won’t soon forget. And I get to do it again on December 12.

I learned that taking someone’s portrait doesn’t rescue them from poverty.

But it does rescue them.

More on Help-Portrait….

We’re gonna have to talk about the Georgia Bulldogs at some point.

And this morning is as good a time as any.

You know, for years I’ve been a die hard Dawg fan. Some would say I bleed red and black.

My grandmother attended UGA for grad school (right, Mama?), my mom attended UGA, I attended UGA, and my sister attended UGA. [Dad went to Alabama. And now my youngest sister is at Auburn. I know. We were heartbroken about it too.]

So, all these things to say : I have and and will always cheer for the Dawgs.

Yet, it appears that this is going to be the year that my cheering is mixed with wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I’m not going to point fingers. And here’s why. I don’t want to come up on a UGA player’s google alert. You understand, I’m sure.

Trust me, if I didn’t mind ending up on a google alert, I would say names. Oh boy would I. Cause I have some names. Some names that I would like to write and then immediately frown upon. But I will play it safe and say that yes, I understand that we are not in our “finest form.” And I am fully aware that we aren’t really “winning games” or “scoring more points that the other team” or “expected to have an amazing season.”

Sure, we’re 3-2 [pre-UT game today]. Which a lot of teams would be happy with. But not us. Not under Coach Richt. We have 10 win seasons. That’s all we know.

Until this year. Probably. Because even though I don’t want to admit it, I don’t see us beating Florida. So, if we win EVERY OTHER GAME, it will be a 9 win season. And the SEC championship? Psshhh.

It’s just frustrating. We haven’t won a national championship since 1980. THE YEAR I WAS BORN. And I hate to think that our chance at winning left last year after the NFL draft.

I love college football. I love the Georgia Bulldogs. But this Saturday deserved a disappointed fan rant.

You’re welcome.

Go dawgs!….?….. uh…. please?

What’s your college team of choice? How’s your season going?

Here’s another installment of YouBlog- where I introduce you to one of your fellow blogmies. Remember the goal is to get to know each other! Many of you readers/commenters were born to be friends- I just know it. And I’m out to prove it!012409_0009 2

I love Laura. She’s someone who has become a bloggy-friend via comments and emails and blog reading time- both on my end and her’s.

Laura spent about six months living in Jerusalem and just returned home in July. Her post about transitioning back home is really touching and gives me a new perspective. I’ve never been a long-term missionary and I’ve never studied abroad, so it is interesting to read what it is like for someone to come back.

And if Jerusalem didn’t impress you, maybe this will. Senior at NOTRE DAME. TWO majors. TWO minors. We might have just found the sharpest knife in the AnnieBlogs drawer, ladies and gentlemen.

So go talk a walk in the bronzed shoe. [I'm punny.] And tell Laura hey for me. And click around this Irish girl’s bloggy home. You won’t be sorry.

Hope you have enjoyed YouBlogs! We are booked up here until the end of 2009. So if you wanna be featured, hang on and another chance will come around in 2010!

My story.

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

For the last several months, we have been taking turns sharing our stories in small group.

Last night was my turn.

How in the world do you tell people a full synopsis of 29 years in less than an hour? And how do you tell people all of it? All the happy? All the sad?

I dunno. But I did it.

Ten of my closest friends heard the nitty-gritty.

The family stuff. The friend stuff. The sin stuff. The hurt stuff. The funny stuff. The weight stuff. The heart stuff. The single stuff. The Jesus stuff. The not-so-Jesus stuff.

All my junk.

I had to lay it out there. Because I knew what was coming next.

Prayer time.

If these ten people are going to group around me, lay hands on my shoulders, and pray their guts out for me, I can’t hide the ugly. To not disclose that which is dirty is to do a disservice to them- they wanted to pray for the things that REALLY matter.

And the things that REALLY matter aren’t REALLY pretty.

It was uncomfortable. It was tearful [shocker]. It was painful.

And it was beautiful.

My people. They love well.

At the end, Betsy, in her gentle way, reminded us all of something pretty important. It’s really not my story. This is God’s story. I’m just in it.

And when I think of it that way, the ugly loses it’s stink a bit. The pain dulls. And everything zooms out into right perspective.

It’s not about me. I mean, it kinda is. It’s my life. But it’s not mainly about me. It’s about Him.

Don’t get me wrong- it is important for people to know “your story”; but in reality, it’s way more important for people to hear your role in His story.

Either way, it’s time to tell the story.

So take time today. Pick up the phone and call someone. Grab coffee with a friend. Send an email. Tell someone the story you are living- who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re going.

And tell of how Jesus has been the Author and perfecter of your faith (Heb. 12:2).

Like an internet sized thank you note.

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

When my grandmother passed away about a month ago, we were kindly flooded with emails, phone calls, plants, and sweet cards, and food.

Lots and lots of food.

That I am still paying for, in the fatty kind of currency.

And Mama sent tons of thank you notes. I sent a few. A paltry few compared to the piles she had to mail.

But there was this group of women from our church, my mom’s best friends for years and years, who really went above and beyond in their preparation of food for our family.

I know. It’s just food.

But it tasted like love. Like friendship.

So though Mama mailed one to each of them [be ye not concerned, southern women, they did get a proper thank you note as well], this is my thank you note.

Click on over to my bloggy vacation home to read the article dedicated to the wonderful women who loved our family so well that day.

Clicks.

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

That’s funny to me. Cause I’m going to show you some pictures and when you take a picture, the old cameras used to make a “click” sound. And then also I’m going to give you links to see, and you will “click” on those.

[See? It's like a double meaning.]

[I'm a wordsmith. What can I say.]

First of all, in my pre-Nash life, I taught school.  And I recently had the pleasure of heading back to my ole stomping grounds for the homecoming football game.

The 5th graders I taught are now 10th and 11th graders. They are no longer in the stands. They are on homecoming court and they are making the game ending interception.

It. Is. Awesome.

I thought it would entertain us all to see some side by side then & now shots.

girls_collage

Top is 2009 and bottom is 2004. The height. Just for starters. But also both girls have gone from cute to beautiful. Love ‘em.

oney_collage

Left is 2009 and right is 2004. This one is wild to me. Because he is a man now. Not just a cute kid. But an entertaining, respectful, kind, and hilarious dude.

Anyways, just thought that was cool. I’m totally crazy about these kids and their families. And I’ll be posting pictures again in another five years probably.

Here’s the other picture I’m excited about today. Me with some of my (in)courage buddies (L to R, Angie, me, Stephanie, and Jessica). It was just one of my favorite Friday nights in a while. I really love the new friendships that are growing here.

Sept26

I mean, there have been more pictures taken recently. But I’m thinking of bringing back Smile, Wednesday. So I gotta save some of the goods.

Now, it’s your turn to click.

[See what I did there? Brought back the double meaning joke. It's a gift, really. Being this witty.]

Sophie linked to this article about online safety this week. And after seriously considering moving to the year 1845, I instead decided to make some online changes and thought you might should take a peek at the article too.

Y’all have been so sweet and excited about the new prayer plan (part 1 and part 2) that some of you have taken to the contact page and sent me some other prayer posts to read. So I thought I’d share those with those gathered here today.

How To Build A House of Prayer (gorgeous pictures and tear-jerking ideas)

The Power of Consistency (how to stick it out and make real changes)

I know that second one is about weight loss, but it works for prayer as well. Any discipline, really. And we don’t exactly talk about “weight” around here.

Except here. A handful of us in Nashville are doing this fun healthy living challenge for the month of October. Now I’ll be skippy with you, it’s not the easiest website in the world to use, but it is really fun and their ideas are cool – so check it out if you are looking to jump start a healthy Fall season.

Eat. Sweat. Blog.

Finally.

Calling. All. Single. Dudes. My Nash-Besty Betsy has gone and done something crazy. And I love it.

Betsy Wants A Date To A Show

So if you know a single dude that might be interested, this is an opportunity that should not be missed. You can trust me. I’m not friends with punks. I promise she’s fun to hang out with.

Enjoy your weekend, my friends.

I’m super excited about introducing you to this blogger.

But I mean, if you’ve been here long enough, you know Brad. Brad is my Canadian brother. We met a few years ago at a writer’s conference and I have been uber-grateful for his friendship in my life.

Brad is a pastor and an amazing writer. And a giver. You can CLICK HERE to download his first book Finding Home for free. F.R.E.E. I also just finished reading his new book Beloved. For $2.99, it. is. a. steal.

Brad has been blogging for a while. I absolutely love THIS POST. It was Brad’s 39th birthday a few weeks ago and he gave his list of 39 things. It’s a great way to get to know him, see his darlin’ family, and read up on his life.

See? We’re all about get-to-know-you games, without the games part.

So get your clicker ready and click on over to Brad’s blog. Tell him I sent you- his wife Shauna is a FABULOUS cook- maybe she’ll make you some cinnamon rolls or something? :)

Hope you have enjoyed YouBlogs! We are booked up here until the end of 2009. So if you wanna be featured, hang on and another chance will come around in 2010!
