I’m a big fan of Proverbs 4:23.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Throughout my life, when I tried to put feet to guarding my heart, it has always had the same direction. To guard my heart meant:

#1-> Don’t practice signing Christmas cards from myself and my current crush.

Merry Christmas!
We’re happy and married- hope you are too!
Sincerely,
Steve and Annie Don’t-I-Wish

#2-> Don’t sit up late at night wondering whether he is conflicted about whether to take me to dinner or lunch. [He's asleep.]

#3-> Don’t picture Steve Don’t-I-Wish and I sitting on the couch and arguing over what movie to watch. [Thank you, You've Got Mail, for that one.]

#4-> Stop obsessing. Just in general. About him. About me. About the future. [Easier said than done, can I get an amen up in here.]

But in the last few weeks, I’ve watched a dear friend of mine fall gently into deep like with a dude. And it’s been cute as pie. I think it’s fair to say that I might have a crush on their budding relationship- it’s that sweet.

And as I sat with them at lunch, he talked and talked of his family and his life and where he was pre-Nashville. She sat quietly.

Later I said, “Kate [not her real name, duh], why didn’t you tell your stories? What was that?” because the girl can tell some tales of God’s love and faithfulness.

Her answer amazed me- she said that she doesn’t share all her stories with him yet. She said that she’s protecting the things that are in her heart. “Not everyone gets every story, Annie,” she said in a voice that was mildly condescending with a touch of motherly undertones.

Don’t you take that tone with me, Kate. Just cause I spill all my beans all the time doesn’t mean….

Ohhhh….. kkaaayyy. I’ve been doing this wrong all along. I mean, I’ve been right- all those top four things are good to do if for no other reason than to remain NOT CRAZY PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

But I’m learning that guarding my heart also means not letting everything out. I misunderstood- guarding my heart isn’t synonymous with guarding my mind. Guarding my heart is protecting what goes in AS WELL AS protecting what goes out. Being wise when it comes to deep friendships with dudes. Being selective about which stories enter the ears of others.

Brooke Fraser has a song called “Deciphering Me” and I have had one of those lines running laps through my mind like it is training for a marathon-

“For I am a mystery. I am a locked room in a tall tower.”

I wanna be her. My friend in “like” who chooses what to keep to herself. I wanna be her. That girl in the locked room in a tall tower. I wanna be her. The girl who looks back and says, “boy was it worth it to guard my heart” because her stories aren’t strewn all over creation.

I know many of you are married and this blog post may not really mean jack to you, but maybe there is a 19 year old who somehow has found her way here and already knows not to practice writing his last name with her first name but didn’t realize that it is important to guard her stories.

Or maybe she’s not 19. Maybe she’s 28. And she writes this blog. And she has a lot to learn.

I’ve always been a fan of winners.

I’m super excited to announce that we have a winner for the free copy of Holley Gerth’s new book Rain on Me. And the winner is…..

#17:  MrsNaz@BecomingMe

Congrats, Mrs. Naz!  I’ll be emailing you in about 2 minutes to get your address.

And for the rest of you almost-winners, the book is already 15% off and if you enter RAINON20 (Holley’s special code for friends and family) when you check out you’ll receive an extra 20% off everything you purchase by April 1st.

Some of your comments really touched me this week and I want you to know that even if you didn’t win the book, Holley and I are praying for you and asking God to show up for you in this time of need.

Thanks again to sweet Holley for loving our little bloggy-world and giving us free stuff.  Yay!

I’ll be back in a little bit [as in, "sometime today", not like "sometime this month"]. :)

Smile Wednesday #7: iPhone edition

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

It’s been far too long since we had a Smile Wednesday up in here. [Like, since October, which is just ridiculous. I apologize. Sincerely.]

And all these photos were taken using Anita, my new best friend iPhone. She’s such a champ.  I can remember life without her, but I don’t prefer it.

Here’s a fun shot of our book club. We discussed In The Woods, drank Hot Toddys [because the main character had what one might call a "whiskey drinking problem"], and purely enjoyed each other’s company.  Book Club is such a highlight of my Nash-life.

My friends Hillary and Graham had a housewarming party and I truly love this next picture because:

1. Skip on the left looks like he is so thoroughly bored that he is whistling.
2. Jason on the right looks like he is about to give Hillary a swift overhanded punch to the head.
3. And Hillary looks completely content with the entire situation.

Here’s Jason and I enjoying possible the best sushi in the world Nashville.  This is officially the first picture that Anita ever took [single tear].

This is Skip imitating me the day I got my iPhone.  Punk.

Here is a shot of our family dinner.  I completely 100% stole this picture from Andy Merrick [so I guess Anita didn't take them all].  But it’s still taken from an iPhone, so I think it counts. [Back off, rule follower.]  Family dinner is a little tradition we started this night and somehow it has continued on without ceasing. It’s pretty awesome- just a bunch of friends who pool their time and food and laughs together on Sunday nights.  I heart it mucho.

While I’m in the stealing mode, I’ll steal this photo that my friend Jason sent me last week [this Jason, not the previously mentioned Jason] because I think it is possibly the most beautiful shot I’ve seen from an iPhone.  Oh Colorado, I like you in a serious way.

Mmm… Smile Wednesday, I’ve missed you, old friend.  Shall we rekindle?  Only time will tell. But I’m feeling pretty good about it.

By the way, don’t forget that you can ENTER HERE to win a free book!!

Give and take.

That’s how we roll around here.

Here’s one of the reasons you are going to love my profession [and by "profession", I mean "my attempt at being a for real author"].  Because real authors have real author friends.

As is the case today.  I met Holley Gerth a few weeks ago and I knew in about 4.5 minutes that we were going to love being friends. Because she is a blogger [as evidenced here] as well as an author as well as a fun person to be around.  And really, that just sounds like me someone I would like.  So we chatted for a bit and then she did one of my very favorite signs of friendship- she gave me a copy of her book, Rain On Me- Devotions of Hope and Encouragement for Difficult Times.

Rain on Me is a devotional journey to help you not only survive but thrive in the storms of life. A downpour of trials can be a force that destroys and washes away hope, or it can become a tool God uses to bring healing, growth, and new life to our hearts. Through God’s Word, reflection questions, and prayers that you can personalize, these forty devotions deliver encouragement and hope, guiding you as you respond to your circumstances. Writing space is provided throughout for collecting your thoughts and concerns, prayers and praises.

I’ve kept the book in my purse since that day, reading it really any chance I got a free moment.  The interesting thing is that even though I’m not going through a specific difficult time, I can SO relate to many of the chapters. She’s just a good writer like that.

And as a sign of friendship to you, sweet bloggite, Holley is going to give one of you a copy of the book too.  I know, she’s such a giver.  So just leave a comment and you will be entered to win the book.  I’ll use the random number generator on Thursday morning to pick a winner- so you’ve got until Wednesday night at 11:59pm CST to enter.

Also, and this is where things get beauticulous, DaySpring is also offering a 20% discount on ANYTHING you buy from them before April 1st- just click over to Holley’s blog- you can download a portion of the book and see how to get that discount.  [The penny pincher in me is going to buy cards for every holiday in 2009 before April 1.]

Sweet DaySpring.

In exchange for all this giving and giving, could you do me a favor?  CLICK HERE and go vote for the Dove Awards- give a vote to my boys in Third Day for Artist of the Year and Mocha Club artist Addison Road for New Artist of the Year.

I think that’s a fair trade, right?  Free book for someone + 20% off for everyone = 2 votes?  I used to teach math for a living and I’m telling you- that is a stellar equation.

Happy Tuesday.

This makes my Monday.

Monday, March 9th, 2009

“All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.

Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.”

-Romans 8:22-28 (The Message version)

Haircut Day 2009

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Because literally, that is how rarely I get a trim.

And that’s all it ever is.  A trim.

I, my friends, am the biggest haircut wimp you have ever seen in your entire life when it comes to the cut.

Now the color? I’ll tell you, there was a season from about 2005-early 2008 where I thought if the chemical companies could create the color, I could wear it.

Not true.

And not wallet friendly.  So now, I’m back to what I lovingly call “devastatingly mousy brown”.

Here’s the pic of unwashed precut hair.  I post this for 3 reasons:

1. I have no shame.
2. I’m not afraid to say that I did not wash this hair.  If someone is about to wash it for me [which let me say is THE HIGHLIGHT of the experience for me], I am not going to prewash. That’s dumb.
3. I can’t wait for you to see how shockingly similar the After The Final Cut photo is.

So here is the before…..

photo-92

The after pic will be up once I recover from the shock of my hair being exactly 1 inch shorter.

12:47pm- UPDATE: Remember that one time that things didn’t go quite as planned but I think I’m okay with it?

photo-91

Hello, bangs.  Nice to meet you.  Don’t be a pain in the backside please and thank you.

Now, if I can pull off this look everyday, we’ll all stand and applaud in amazement.

Haircut Day 2009 = Success.  Big hugs to DeeDee at Elon Salon who has been cutting my hair since 1993 and still does exactly what she wants even when I say “just a trim”.

If you want, feel free to enjoy an old haircut post.  You can see in the pictures that I went from a calm winter blonde to a blazing brunette.  Lucky for me, devastatingly mousy brown is tres chic for Spring 09.

At least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself.  Over and over and over…..

[Sidenote: If you commented on Wednesday and are waiting to hear back from me, I'm TOTALLY going to respond today. It's on my to do list. I promise.]

It only takes a day.

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Do you half-wish I would bust into “it only takes a spark, to get a fire go-o-ing”?  Welcome back, Summer Camp 1986 Annie.  I’ve missed you and your curly perm.  [Don't ask. I won't show you a picture.]

Today I was drawn to the story of Joseph in Genesis. You know him- technicolor dream coat, sold by his brothers, ends up in Egypt, gets wrongly thrown in jail for being gentlemanly to Potiphar’s wife. [Seriously, God should have hired me to write the Bible. I just summarized, like, 2 chapters in 1 sentence. I'm good y'all.]

[Mama, am I in trouble for making a Bible joke? I was just kidding. God knows I wasn't the best writer for the job.]

So Joseph sits in jail for a LONG TIME. And then God gives him the correct interpretation for Pharaoh’s dreams and Joseph, in one day, goes from prisoner to top dog.  Literally.  Pharaoh, in Genesis 41:41, puts Joseph in charge of the whole land of Egypt.

Joseph prayed to get out of jail for a long time. There were even other prisoners released that said they would put a good word in for our man Joe. But they forgot.  For TWO YEARS. Uh, fellas, this isn’t like forgetting to put your dishes in the dishwasher. THIS IS FORGETTING TO GET A FRIEND OUT OF JAIL, DUMMIES.

But then in one day. One command. Joseph’s whole life changed. I bet he thought there was a chance he’d be in there forever. But God knew different.

I’m sure there are things you’ve been praying for. Maybe for a really long time. Or situations that are sad or crappy [sorry about the language, Mama. Strike 2].  I know I have a list of things in my life that feel like I’ve been in a jail cell begging to get out. To no avail.

Today I simply just want to bring you encouragement, friend. IT ONLY TAKES ONE COMMAND. One day. And the whole situation, your whole situation, can change. Don’t give up. DON’T QUIT PRAYING.

Sitting here, I could not get Beth Moore’s Patriarchs study out of my mind. So I hopped up, grabbed the book, and flipped to the lesson on Joseph being forgotten.  And of course, because God RULEZ, my favorite Beth Moore quote EVER is in this exact lesson-

“Heaven is replete with angelic activity as God faithfully completes in the spiritual realms what He will release in the visible realms when the time is right.” -Beth Moore

Yes. Yes. and Yes.

So go back to God again today, bring that same topic up again, beg again, ask again, seek again, knock again, cry again. Whatever. But just know, one day soon, because He is faithful, He will release down here what He’s doing up there.

And according to Joseph’s life, it’s worth the wait. But you’ll have to take his word for it- not mine. I’m the prisoner chained beside you, sharing a story of freedom that gave me hope.

March comes in like a …. list?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Sure it does.

*It for real comes in like an abominable snow man because GOOD GRAVY PETE it is cold here in Nashville.  24 degrees?  No thank you, March.

*Meet my new best friend iPhone. Her name is Anita.  She’s about the cutest thing goin’.  I’m excited. A little bit.  A lot bit. [Anita is a delayed Christmas gift... I promise I'm not spending money like this out of my own pocket.]annie_and_anita
*I’m not even going to tell you the story where my friend Jason was officially the first person to DROP ANITA. It still makes my stomach turn to remember the sound of Anita hitting the ground.

*How’s Lent treating everybody? I seriously have been praying for each of you that left a comment saying what you were giving up for Lent. If you want to add to the list, or see what I’m doing for Lent, or just read what all your fellow bloggites are up to for the next 33-ish days, click here.

*The Bachelor. OH. MY. POOR. MELISSA. Listen, I know many of you think that the whole thing is staged and what have you, but let me just say that as my friend and I watched the show last night, I cringed.  Physically cringed and covered my eyes.  So if they are all faking it, they each deserve an Oscar. And every single of the zillions of pennies they earned the last 9 months. If you want a super perfect recap from my friend Sophie, click here.

*Our book club is reading In The Woods and it is AWESOME. It’s a mystery and yesterday I got so freaked out IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY that I had to quit reading.  That, my friends, is some good writing. [Let me say this disclaimer: LOTS of cuss words, including the F-bomb. A LOT.  So consider yourself warned and don't read it and say, "Annie liked this book so she must say the F-bomb all the time." No, I don't.]

*I don’t have OCD, but I do have one OCD tendency.  I worry when I leave a bathroom that I’ve forgotten to flush. So I check and recheck probably five times. Freak in da house.

*Any of you iPhoners out there?  Tell me, what’s your favorite free app?  And, I really wish there was something as cool as TweetDeck for Twitter (so I can separate people I follow in categories), but I haven’t found one.  I love Anita, but I don’t love how she tweets. What do you guys use for Twitter on your iPhones?

*Happy Tuesday.
